Did Osama Bin Laden's Son Escape SEALs?

One of bin Laden's wives claims son managed to slip Navy SEALs during raid.

Bin Laden family condemns killing, while wife says one son escaped

'Osama bin Laden's family is taking center stage in the fallout over his death.
Yesterday, the al Qaeda leader's sons denounced what they called their father's "arbitrary killing." Meanwhile, Pakistani officials believe one of bin Laden's sons--perhaps one known as "the Crown Prince of Terror"--may be missing after escaping from the U.S. raid.
In a statement, bin Laden's sons questioned why their father "was not arrested and tried in a court of law so that the truth is revealed to the people of the world." It is not known how many of bin Laden's numerous sons (there are believed to be as many as 17) endorsed the statement.
"We maintain that arbitrary killing is not a solution to political problems," the statement continued, adding that "justice must be seen to be done."
President Obama has rejected suggestions that the killing was improper, telling "60 Minutes" that anyone who questioned whether bin Laden deserved his fate "needs to have their head examined."
The sons' statement, which also called for bin Laden's three wives and several children to be released from custody, is said to have been prepared at the direction of Omar bin Laden, 30.
Omar bin Laden, a metals trader who has been living in Cairo, appears at pains to disassociate himself from his father's belief in political violence. "We want to remind the world that Omar bin Laden, the fourth-born son of our father, always disagreed with our father regarding any violence and always sent messages to our father, that he must change his ways and that no civilians should be attacked under any circumstances," the statement said...'

Where’s Hillary? Hasidic paper breaks the rules by editing Clinton out of White House photo

'Hillary Clinton's expression, right hand clasped over her mouth in astonishment, is largely responsible for making the above photo iconic--and, to at least one newspaper, sexually suggestive.
In the photo, President Obama and his national security team are huddled around a conference table in the White House Situation Room, watching CIA director Leon Panetta narrate last Sunday's raid on Osama bin Laden's compound. The mood is clearly tense.
When Women's Wear Daily consulted a coterie of photo editors and designers about why the image is "destined to be one for the history books," Clinton was foremost in their responses.
"The Hillary Clinton expression is the one that holds the photograph fully," Time's photo director told the magazine. "You can see 10 years of tension and heartache and anger in Hillary's face," Conde Nast's Scott Dadich agreed.
Turns out she was probably just coughing during that crucial moment captured by White House photographer Pete Souza. But nevertheless, the image still proved a bit too racy for at least one of the many newspapers that printed it.
That would be the Ultra-Orthodox Hasidic broadsheet Der Tzitung, published in Brooklyn. The paper photoshopped Clinton, as well at the only other woman who could be seen in the room--Audrey Tomason, the national director of counterterrorism--out of the frame.

"Apparently the presence of a woman, any woman, being all womanly and sexy all over the United States' counterterrorism efforts was too much for the editors of Der Tzitung to handle," noted the prominent women's blog Jezebel.
Indeed, "The Hasidic newspaper will not intentionally include any images of women in the paper because it could be considered sexually suggestive," Rabbi Jason Miller explains in The Jewish Week. Though he notes that the publication's "fauxtograpphing" may in fact be a graver act against their religious tenets: "To my mind, this act of censorship is actually a violation of the Jewish legal principle of g'neivat da'at (deceit)."
Beyond that, Der Tzitung's editors apparently missed or blatantly ignored the guidelines stipulated on the official White House Flickr page, where the photo was released for use by news organizations: "The photograph may not be manipulated in any way."
The White House has not issued a response on the altered image.'

Al Qaeda threats, terror plans surface

'CNN looks back at the decade-long hunt for Osama bin Laden in the award-winning documentary "In the Footsteps of bin Laden" at 11 ET Friday night.

(CNN) -- Al Qaeda warnings against the United States emerged Friday as the materials taken from Osama bin Laden's compound continued to yield a trove of intelligence, including details about a possible attack on the 10th anniversary of 9/11.

Al Qaeda, the bin Laden terrorist network that carried out the deadly attack in 2001, confirmed its leader's death on Friday in a Web statement and used that opportunity to taunt and threaten the United States.
"Sheikh Osama didn't build an organization that will vanish with his death or fades away with his departure," according to the statement, which CNN could not independently authenticate.

The statement, which congratulates the "Islamic Nation on the martyrdom of their devoted son Osama," repeated themes and threats made over the years in prior al Qaeda statements.

"The blood of the mujahid sheikh, Osama bin Laden, may God have mercy on him, is very dear to us and more precious to us and to every Muslim from being shed in vain," the statement said. A mujahid is defined as a Muslim engaged in what he considers to be jihad.

"This blood will be a curse that will chase the Americans and their agents, a curse that will pursue them inside and outside their country, and soon -- with God's help -- we pray that their happiness turns into sorrow and may their blood mix with their tears and let Sheikh Osama's resonate again...." Gotta Watch: Dogs of war

The recent mission to capture and kill Osama bin Laden has only underscored the need for military canine units. It was recently revealed that part of the SEAL team included a dog , who was choppered in to help identify possible threats to his team. These videos highlight stories of heroic military dogs during times of peace and war.
Deployed canines honored - A dog who survives six IED explosions surely deserves a war monument. Jacko is just one of many dogs to be honored at the F. Walton working dog memorial.

Obama meets bin Laden raiders, promises victory over al Qaeda

'Fort Campbell, Kentucky (CNN) -- President Barack Obama met Friday afternoon with members of the military team responsible for conducting the raid on Osama bin Laden's compound, and promised a war-weary nation victory over al Qaeda.
"We are ultimately going to defeat al Qaeda," the president told more than 2,300 troops who recently returned from Afghanistan. "We have cut off their head."
"Our strategy is working and there is no greater evidence of that than justice finally being delivered to Osama bin Laden," he declared. "We're still the America that does the hard things, that does the great things."
The president made his remarks at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, home to the Army's 101st Airborne Division and the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, the group that operated the helicopters used in the raid....'

Bin Laden killing won’t settle debate over enhanced interrogations

'The killing of Osama bin Laden has reignited a heated political debate over the value of "enhanced interrogation techniques"--what many call torture--in the fight against terrorism.
The harsh techniques were authorized under the Bush administration and championed over the last decade by several Bush officials as crucial tools in the effort to thwart terror plots and ultimately defeat Islamic extremism. But most human-rights lawyers call them illegal, and although President Obama has adopted some aspects of his predecessors policies on the war on terror, he has denounced the use of such techniques as ineffective and "a recruitment tool for terrorists."
The debate over interrogations has largely faded from the news over the last year or two, but since the announcement of bin Laden's killing Sunday night, it has re-emerged. Conservative supporters of such techniques argue that the bin Laden operation proves they are effective. "I would assume that the enhanced interrogation program that we put in place produced some of the results that led to bin Laden's ultimate capture," former Vice President Dick Cheney said on Fox News Monday.
Liberal opponents counter that it proves no such thing. "To the best of our knowledge, based on a look, none of [the information that led to bin Laden] came as a result of harsh interrogation practices," Sen. Dianne Feinstein, the California Democrat who chairs the Senate intelligence committee, said the same day.
But the publicly available facts paint a far grayer picture. There's little concrete evidence that enhanced techniques were crucial in producing information that uncovered bin Laden's whereabouts. But it's not impossible that they played a role....'

Art Nation meets Andrej Pejic

Andrej Pejic has emerged as the poster boy for androgyny. Art Nation meets the 19-year-old Serbian Australian model who has taken the fashion world by storm.

When Melbourne’s oldest department store, Myer, recently reopened their flagship store, they pulled off a huge coup by bringing fashion’s man of the moment, Andrej Pejic, home to celebrate. Pejic joined well known models Jennifer Hawkins and Jessica Hart on the red carpet for the gala opening, but all eyes were on him – the male model who is famous for looking like a woman.

Gender bending goes in and out of fashion. Musicians like David Bowie, the stars of glam rock and Boy George have all blurred the gender boundaries. Riding the current wave is Pejic, the 19-year-old Broadmeadows boy who is threatening to rewrite the laws of fashion.

Art Nation met Pejic during a shoot for J'Aton Couture on his recent return home to Melbourne.

As fashion editor Patty Huntington observes, "There’s something quite sexy and subversive about a man in a dress...

"The effect that Andrej’s had in fashion, it’s really like a bomb going off’."

Pejic has emerged as the poster boy for fashion androgyny. Designers such as Jean Paul Gaultier and Marc Jacobs have been so taken with his unique feminine look that they have featured him in their high profile women's fashion campaigns around the globe. But Pejic’s life and his journey from suburban Melbourne boy to the global catwalk model has not been without its challenges. Born in Tulza, in Bosnia and Herzegovina, his family fled the war torn region in the 1990s before settling in Australia as refugees.

Pejic began to experiment with his ”look” as a teenager and was soon picked up by modelling agency, Chadwicks. Since then his career has taken off internationally, making it the stuff of fairytales. However, his rag to riches story hasn’t pleased everyone. When he took to the catwalk for Jean Paul Gaultier’s women’s haute couture show in Paris - the first man ever to do so - there was a feminist backlash with headlines like, ‘Fashion’s Ultimate Insult to Women’ splashed across the tabloids.

However, Pejic himself is enjoying the ride and claims to be equally happy modelling men’s or women’s fashion. He has even become a role model for many young men eager to express their feminine side and young male models keen to follow his lead.

"Andrej is a special story," says Huntington. "He’s become an icon."

The Fast Fix: Is Obama now unbeatable?

Will Osama bin Laden's death impact the 2012 presidential election?

'The death of Osama bin Laden is a momentous episode in American history that will undoubtedly re-shape the political dialogue for weeks and months to come.
While making hard and fast predictions about what it all means for our politics is tough, there are a few ways in which the impact will be almost immediately felt.
First, there will be a period of putting aside partisanship, similar to what happened in the aftermath of the Sept. 11 2001 terrorist attack that introduced the world to bin Laden.
From statements of support by Republican presidential candidates to an impromptu rally outside of the White House last night, it's clear that at least for now, politics is on hold. The question, of course, is how long it will last.
Second, President Obama will likely experience a significant popularity boost in the aftermath of the news.
While the killing of Osama took a decade and involved three presidents and thousands of people, it was Obama who gave the order that ultimately led to the terrorist's death. It was Obama who announced the news last night. And it will be Obama who benefits most from a sense that he did what he said he would do.
This is a significant moment in the Obama presidency -- perhaps the biggest moment. Amidst the celebrations and renewed patriotism, it's easy to assume that bin Laden's death will be a significant issue in 2012. But, history has shown that a struggling economy trumps all else in electoral politics.
At the end of the day, the 2012 election will STILL be about the economy and how people feel about their financial futures.
But, this is a major win for president Obama that will buy him time and goodwill from the American people.'

Immigration Reflection/Rant

Yes, there is another part to this Reflection on immigration. This second part is focused on the DREAM Act. But if I had to put it as another thing it would be that of a rant. It is neither our job nor our goal to be the great undocumented leaders that have come to save the adorable, helpless undocumented youth from the big, bad machine. Our mission, our aim is to work on our liberation collectively, to empower all undocumented youth by creating this environment, these safe spaces, this critical mass that enables them to own any and all parts of their identity with dignity. This notion of our bound liberation also brings to mind the kind of crazy realization that though undocumented, some of us live in “safe states,” states that may not exactly be friendly to undocumented youth, but are miles ahead of states like Georgia and Arizona, who are openly hostile to not only the existence of undocumented youth, but remain hell bent on stripping the few rights and resources they have away. In addition to this safe state mentality comes this sense of complacency for those living in these states, that as long as we have in-state tuition/financial aid/access to certain resources, we’ve “won” or have nothing to fight for. We must continue to challenge and push back on that mentality with the fact that, as long as other undocumented youth don’t have these same opportunities, there remains a reason to fight. Though we are all marginalized and oppressed, there should still be a reason, an obligation even, to fight, to defend them, no matter how geographically removed from you they may be.
One central point of consensus of the idea of being on the offensive if you haven’t already been forced to be on the defensive, or maybe even better, striving to pursue both. Inaction is not a viable option, not a sustainable option, and sure as hell not an option that serves the empowerment of undocumented youth. No one is going to do our liberating for us. Sure, Congress may get their acts together and pass the DREAM Act, but that is one piece of our liberation puzzle, and a piece that we still have to actively  work for, as the past 10 years have shown. We, the affected, know our struggle the best, know our stories the best, and we need to own our liberation. Another realization? That very strange limbo/backwardness of ICE and police and fear. We find ways to stay in hiding so we don’t get caught by police, and when we do happen to get caught. Rolling a stop sign, driving to school, it’s tough love, instant deportation. But when we work through our fears and choose to buck the system and openly risk arrest, something strange happens. Police officers treat you nicely (as they’re arresting you, nonetheless), ICE officers treat you differently and suddenly, under the microscope of the public eye, the PR machine of ICE and DHS decides it’s a bad idea to get involved and try to deport anyone. ICE is a greater threat when you accidentally come into contact with them than when you get all up in their respective grills and tell them that you are undocumented and unafraid.
For the DREAM Act, we lobbied. In the words of Cesar Chavez, We Organized. In the words of Harvey Milk, We Came Out. In the words of Martin Luther King Jr., We Escalated. Then, and only then, in our words, We Existed.
                                                                                           END of rant. ^^

Immigration Reflection

Our discussion on Thrusday for Immigration was like Palo said at the end one of our best ones we have done. I agree. Everyone had something to say. And although we had our hot spots it was settled with civility. As I was listening to the talking going on with everyone I realized that not everyone felt strongly or weakly on this subject. Enough to get us to say something. It was a lot of debating and thinking about a solution, how much of immigrants are taking jobs, whether or not thy were a threat etc. It was even considered that we should give Arizona back to Mexico. Another thing was that of why the government step within this issue and do something directly. Like that of a national law that takes effect in every single state, all 50 of them. That need to abide by it, instead of having separate ones. Something else that caught my attention was what Robert said about if the US stepped in Mexico to make things better what could happen. A lot of people debated on this saying that the Mexican Drug Cartels wouldn't go up against the United States military. Then Robert concluded that what if these Cartels decided that they would start hurting innocent people because they don't want anything happening to there business. A lot of 'what if' speculations were thrown around. The final person to speak settled I think at least for me what I was thinking during the whole 30 minutes. Which was what is there to talk about?
