PICTURES: Japan Earthquake, Two Weeks Later
'Two weeks after northeastern Japan was struck by a massive earthquake and tsunami, the cost of the disaster is becoming clearer. The Japanese government has estimated the direct damage at as much as $310 billion, making it the world's costliest-ever natural disaster. As of today, more than 10,000 deaths have been confirmed and another 17,000 people remain missing.
At Japan's stricken Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, it raised suspicions of a possible breach when two workers waded into water 10,000 times more radioactive than normal and suffered skin burns.
Earthquake survivors return to their homes to collect what they can find, to mourn their losses, and try to find a sense of normalcy in lives that have been ripped apart.'

Tokyo shoppers clean store shelves of basic goods
TOKYO – Nearly two weeks of rolling blackouts, distribution problems and contamination fears prompted by a leaking, tsunami-damaged nuclear plant have left shelves stripped bare of some basic necessities in stores across Tokyo. Some people are even turning to the city's ubiquitous vending machines to find increasingly scarce bottles of water.
At the source of the anxiety — the overheated, radiation-leaking nuclear plant — there was yet another setback Thursday as two workers were injured when they stepped into radiation-contaminated water. The two were treated at a hospital.
Supplies of bottled water grew scarce in Tokyo, one day after city officials warned that the level of radioactive iodine in the tap water was more than twice what is considered safe for babies to drink. Tests conducted Thursday showed the levels in the city's water fell to acceptable limits for infants, but they were up in neighboring regions.'

Japan Aid Effort: Is Government Bureaucracy Slowing Help?
'By 9:30 a.m. local time on March 22, the emergency shelter at Saitama Super Arena, just north of Tokyo, had reached its maximum capacity of 500 volunteers. The other 1,500 do-gooders wanting to help the displaced people of Futaba, the town closest to ground zero of the earthquake- and tsunami-damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, were turned away by volunteers holding hand-printed cardboard signs that said "We are sorry, but we cannot take any more volunteers. Please try again tomorrow."'

Education Reform Discussion Reflection
This discussion I felt was a lot more productive. Everything I think had their own personal connection to the way they felt education should be. In that it also had a lot of ideas that struck me as something very interesting. Not only that but also the different variety of students that had gone and done other forms of schooling such as Private, Independent and Charter before coming into the Public educational system that they are in now. Hearing how it was first hand from them was indeed in a way helpful on in sighting what goes on and the pros and cons of that as well. Over all I think the discussion was great. Although and administer was not in attendance I feel that was a good thing because we have people such as myself (haha..) that I don't believe would have expressed themselves as they did on Wednesday if a administer had been present. I hope that we all can come to terms as a Nation on reforming education for the future generations to come.

Sustainable Apparel Coalition delivers the eco-skinny on your skinny jeans
‘I spend a lot of time shining a light on murky areas of the food system, but what about the industrial-apparel complex? Just as the food we eat has a material basis and a history, so do our clothes. It turns out that I know a lot more about the (grass-fed, local) beef I ate last night than I do about the (non-organic) cotton T-shirt on my back.
Recently, a group of apparel-industry companies banded together to launch a tool to help consumers -- and the industry itself -- figure out the environmental impacts of our clothing choices. The Sustainable Apparel Association consists of big-name brands like Patagonia, Adidas, Nike, and Timberland, retailers Walmart, JCPenney's, and Target, and well as Duke University, Environmental Defense Fund, and the EPA.
The plan is to develop a comprehensive database to track the ecological impact of clothing at every level of production, manufacture, distribution, and consumption, with the goal of giving every garment on retail racks a sustainability score....’

Tearing down urban freeways to make room for a new bicycle economy

Here's one way to fund bicycle infrastructure: Stop building freeways in cities.
Better yet, tear down the ones we already have.
Cities are starting to catch on that becoming bicycle friendly is one of the best investments they can make.
Cities are also starting to realize that removing freeways makes more economic sense than maintaining or expanding them. In the last year, with the help of federal and state funding, cities like Baltimore and New Haven have been demolishing the "highways to nowhere" that have divided their neighborhoods, drained their populations, and damaged their economies and their children's health since the 1970s.
Finding room for safe bicycle infrastructure in already strained and contested budgets can be difficult. That's especially true in places where bicycling has no historical place in the transportation budget, and is still seen as either a whim of the elite or last resort of the poor.
But the economic benefits of freeway removal make anything seem possible.
Our freeway system is crumbling. Freeways in cities are vastly expensive, disastrous for public health and safety, and destructive of community. The damages disproportionately affect the poor.
Urban freeways are also ineffective as transportation solutions. Caught in the vicious feedback loop of induced demand, they cannot be expanded fast enough to keep up with increasing traffic -- yet each expansion lures yet more drivers who create yet more congestion and demand more lanes, ad infinitum. The maintenance and expansion of these roadways gobble up transportation funds that could create and maintain less costly and destructive alternatives.
The numbers at play are almost too large to comprehend, but comparison is enlightening.
Bike lanes cost anywhere from $5,000 to $60,000 per mile to add to an existing road. That includes everything from engineering and design to paint and concrete to traffic signals.
Does that seem like a lot? Well, let's compare.
Freeway construction in Michigan's countryside clocks in at $8 million per mile. In the state's cities, with their need for overpasses, underpasses, exits and entrances, and mitigation of construction impacts on health and commerce, the cost jumps to an average of $39 million per mile.
And that's a bargain-basement rate compared to many parts of the country. On the other end of the spectrum, Boston has the most expensive urban freeway systems in the country, costing over $1 billion per mile.
In Portland, Ore., a single mile of urban freeway costs on average $65 million per mile to build; that's about the same dollar figure as the entire amount as the city spent in 20 years on the bicycle infrastructure that made it one of the most famous bicycle cities in the world, with a bicycle economy worth far more than that amount every year. For further perspective, it was just announced that $100 million has already been spent on planning for a contentious $4 to $10 billion freeway expansion project here that may never be built.
Those sums don't include maintenance, which can cost nearly as much as building new miles of freeway, and which, thanks to our interstate system being largely built in a short period of time, is all starting to crumble at once in the last decade -- just as federal transportation funding is running out fast. (Remember that bridge in Minnesota?) As early as 2000, the amount of spending needed for basic, safe maintenance of our national freeways and bridges was 20 percent higher than the $30 billion that was spent that year.
By contrast, according to a 2009 report by the League of American Bicyclists, for the $75 million spent repaving three miles of urban interstate, California could have installed 1,250 miles of some of the country's most expensive bike lanes.
Cities that have chosen (or been forced by citizen groups) to stop building or to remove freeways have been rewarded tremendously, and not just economically.
The scene today on San Francisco's Embarcadero, where a freeway once loomed.Photo: Martin DavidssonTalk of removing San Francisco's Embarcadero Freeway began almost as soon as it was built. When it was taken out of commission by the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, it quickly became clear that the predicted traffic snarls weren't happening; it was demolished and replaced with an arterial street and a now beloved linear park along the water.
When the city of Milwaukee, Wisc. removed a contested, never-finished freeway spur in 2002, the estimated cost for needed safety repairs was $100 million. Removal cost $25 million, and the 26 acres of land freed up for redevelopment attracted over $300 million in investments. Mayor John Norquist, overseeing the project, famously said, "Highways don't belong in cities. Period."
President Eisenhower, the father of the U.S. interstate system, agreed. He reportedly only discovered that freeways were being built in cities, rather than between them, in 1959. He wanted them to be eliminated, but the march of progress had already left him behind.
He was right: We don't need freeways in cities. And we can't afford them.
Not every city has gotten that message. Right now in Seattle, the earthquake-damaged Alaskan Way Viaduct seems destined to be replaced by a costly freeway tunnel along the city's waterfront -- despite the wishes of voters. In San Diego County, the $2.6 billion proposed for spending on bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure over the next 40 years has attracted more scrutiny than the $82 billion slated for roads in the same plan, including at least one highly contested freeway expansion project. In Portland, planning is underway for a new, widened freeway bridge that will bring more congestion into the center of the city. The ultimate cost of that project is estimated to be between $4 and $10 billion.
There's a lot of criticism of the cost of bicycle infrastructure. But look at it this way: the simple act of choosing not to build one mile of urban freeway can buy you a world-class bicycle city with a thriving local economy.
We can tear down these freeways and make sure that green spaces, equitable new development, and quality walking and bicycling infrastructure take their place. Soon, we may have no other choice.
Two weeks from today, we'll take on the health care crisis. With bikes, of course.’

UN vote clears way for US-NATO attack on Libya
'The United Nations Security Council Thursday night approved a resolution that paves the way for the United States and other major imperialist powers to conduct a direct military intervention in Libya under the pretense of a “humanitarian” mission to protect civilian lives.
The resolution, sponsored by the US, France, Britain and Lebanon, goes far beyond earlier proposals for a no-fly zone, authorizing the use of military force including “all necessary measures … to protect civilians and civilian populated areas under threat of attack.” These “areas” include Benghazi, the city of one million which remains the sole stronghold of the revolt that began against the Gaddafi dictatorship one month ago. The sole limitation placed by the resolution is its exclusion of “a foreign occupation force on any part of Libyan territory.”
The vote sets the stage for a bombardment of Libya by US, French and British warplanes. French Prime Minister Francois Fillon told France-2 Television that military action could begin within hours of the resolution’s approval. And the Associated Press cited an unnamed member of the British Parliament as saying, “British forces were on stand by for air strikes and could be mobilized as soon as Thursday night.”
American military officials have already warned that even the imposition of a no-fly zone entails the prior destruction of Libya’s air defense capabilities, meaning a major bombing campaign against Libya that will undoubtedly entail “collateral damage” measured in the killing and maiming of Libyan civilians....'

Mind-controlled gaming becoming a reality
It's all in your head.
'Controlling a video game with your mind might seem the stuff of science fiction, but then again, so did the idea of motion controls.
While still a ways from being a mainstream phenomenon, mind-controlled games are already on store shelves -- and more are coming.
Leading the charge is Neurosky. The San Jose, CA-based company is the, well, brains behind Mattel's Mindflex (Buy|Search) children's game -- which lets kids raise and lower a small foam ball solely by focusing their concentration -- as well as the Star Wars Force Trainer (Buy|Search), which basically does the same thing, only with a heavier geek vibe.
The company has slowly been branching out into the video game sector, though. At the recent Game Developers Conference, Neurosky showed off its MindWave headset, a gadget that monitors brainwave impulses from your forehead and categorizes them into different mental states, like relaxed or stressed. Using a device from tech company Puzzlebox, developers can learn more about how people play the game, seeing their levels of concentration and relaxation in real time.
For the player, that could mean titles with more emotional impact, as game makers can use the device to fine-tune their games.
Neurosky applies similar tech to MyndPlay, a custom video player. While not exactly meeting the traditional definition of a game, the intriguing system monitors the watcher's mental activity during critical points in specifically designed films and offers multiple outcomes, depending on their focus and relaxation level.
Neurosky is hardly alone in the mind games space, however. Rival Emotiv has released the EPOC, a neuroheadset that costs $299 and ships with a pair of games: Cortex Arcade, which includes Tetris- and Pong-like minigames, and Spirit Mountain, which lets you control a world's environment (among other things) based on your stress and concentration levels. And OCZ Technology also offers a game controller dubbed nia, which it says will let people play any PC game using only their facial expressions, eye movements and brainwave activity.
Exactly how accurate are these systems? It seems to vary from person to person, but most people who have tried them have walked away fairly impressed. Still, it may be a while before we're playing games completely through mental energy.
"I'd say it's coming in the next 10 years," says Tansy Brook of Neurosky. "Right now, the most logical fits for us are casual games and serious games, like helping with stress management. As far as the more hardcore gaming stuff, it's coming. We are working with a leading game console provider who's interested in integrating the technology."
Surprisingly, the idea of a mind-reading game is not a new phenomenon in the video game industry. As far back as 1983, Atari was toying with the concept for the Atari 2600. That company's Mindlink controller was never released, but the prototype let players control a game through the movement of the muscles in their head. Though primitive compared to today's technology (and ultimately something the company shelved when testers complained of headaches), it launched the trend.
So it may not be new, but this sort of technology has definitely caught the interest of game designers -- and could turn up in the unlikeliest of places in the future.
"When you look at our games, more and more we have this representation of player state, where we think we know how you feel, essentially," Gabe Newell, co-founder of Half-Life hitmaker Valve Software, told PC Gamer last year. "With biometrics, rather than guessing, we can actually use a variety of things like gaze tracking, skin galvanic response, pulse rate and so on. ... If you're in a competitive situation and you see someone's heart rate go up, it's way more rewarding than we would have thought. And if you see somebody in a co-op game sweating, people tend to respond to that way more than we would have thought."'

A Changed Starbucks. A Changed C.E.O.
How Starbucks aims to get its groove back
'The once-hot brand has soured, so it's attempting new ways to win customers.
RAISE your hand if you remember when Starbucks seemed cool.
Anyone?
Think back. To before the planet groaned with 17,000 Starbucks shops. Before the pumpkin spice lattes and the Ciao Amore CDs. Before the Strawberries & Crème Frappuccino ice cream, the Starbucks cream liqueur, the Pinkberry-inspired Sorbetto.
In short, to before Howard D. Schultz and his trenta-size ambition turned a few coffeehouses here into the vast corporate Empire of the Bean.
The world has often seemed three espressos behind Mr. Schultz — which is why the low-key guy sitting in his office here doesn’t quite seem like Howard Schultz.
Did he just say “but”? As in, “We have won in many ways, but ...”? Was that a “we” instead of an “I”? A note of humility?
Yes, this is Howard Schultz: the man who willed Starbucks onto so many street corners — and then, for a moment, looked as if he might lose it all.'

Unions stand in the way of real reforms in American education
'Any group will have its bad apples and it should surprise no one that researchers can provide solid evidence of rank incompetence among teachers. What should enrage everyone is that unions do their level best to keep them teaching. They do this mostly through devotion to a tenure system that can make trying to fire someone for even the most egregious acts a lengthy, prohibitively expensive process that at the end of the day may still leave the culprit on hand to wreck young lives.'

Is the No Child Left Behind Act Working?
'The pressures of No Child Left Behind has forced some states, like California, Oklahoma, and Texas, to lower the achievement standard that students need to be proficient in reading and math, says Bruce Fuller, a UC Berkeley professor of education and public policy and coauthor of the recent report "Is the No Child Left Behind Act Working?"
Why should we care? Because lowering the bar on what it means to be proficient distorts the true extent to which kids are learning, so we really have no clear knowledge of how kids are progressing.'

Mysterious Glowing Lake
What happens to lakes in an area hit by forest fires and floods? Some will glow in the dark.
For a cluster of lakes in Australia's eastern Victoria, the combination of the fire and then the rain washed ash and nitrogen-rich soil into the water. The Gippsland Lakes experienced a rise in sea level. That caused the lakes to mix with sea water, which also raised the salinity.
This recipe led to the introduction of a species of algae called Noctiluca scintillans, commonly known as "sea sparkle." The bioluminescent brew gave the water a nocturnal glow.
Bioluminescence -- when a living organism lights up at night -- is a natural phenomenon. Australian photographer Phil Hart caught the eerie light of the lakes and shared his snaps.

What's the biggest restaurant chain now?
'It's official: the Subway sandwich chain has surpassed McDonald's Corp. (NYSE: MCD - News) as the world's largest restaurant chain, in terms of units.
At the end of last year, Subway had 33,749 restaurants worldwide, compared to McDonald's 32,737. The burger giant disclosed its year-end store count in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing late last month.
The race for global dominance is an important one for an industry that's mostly saturated in the U.S. High unemployment and economic uncertainty have battered the restaurant industry in the U.S., and chains are increasingly looking overseas for growth, particularly in Asia.'

His Recession, Becoming Hers
'Nancy Folbre is an economics professor at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
It started out as a "mancession": Men's unemployment rates have been higher than women's for the last three years in the United States, as elsewhere. Now, women may be feeling more fear, if not more pain.
Their overall job prospects are lagging behind those of men, and they are likely to be more sharply affected by proposed cuts in federal, state and local spending.
Heather Boushey, an economist with the Center for American Progress, points out that since the economic recovery officially began in June 2009, private-sector employers have hired a net total of 503,000 men, while jobs held by women have declined by 141,000.'

Heather Boushey, an economist with the Center for American Progress, points out that since the economic recovery officially began in June 2009, private-sector employers have hired a net total of 503,000 men, while jobs held by women have declined by 141,000.'

Ohio sets stage for national union-rights fight
'COLUMBUS, Ohio – With Wisconsin convulsed by unrest over a bill to curb public employee unions, a similar measure is steaming toward passage in Ohio, a bigger labor stronghold with a vital role as a political battleground.
The speed with which the bill passed the Ohio Senate is energizing Republicans as they push to break what they see as labor's stranglehold on public agencies.
The close vote bolsters Democrats and their union supporters. They believe they could go to the ballot box to reverse any law that passes.
Wisconsin has a stronger liberal tradition than Ohio, where state workers didn't get the right to bargain collectively until 1983.
The Ohio bill could go to House committee hearings as early as next week and receive strong support from the full chamber.'

The most typical face on the planet
'National Geographic Magazine released a video clip, below, showing the most "typical" human face on the planet as part of its series on the human race called "Population 7 billion."
The researchers conclude that a male, 28-year-old Han Chinese man is the most typical person on the planet. There are 9 million of them.
The image above is a composite of nearly 200,000 photos of men who fit that description.
Don't get used to the results, however. Within 20 years, the most typical person will reside in India.'

Paris prosecutors say Galliano to stand trial
'PARIS – Paris prosecutors on Wednesday ordered John Galliano to stand trial over alleged racial insults — a development welcomed by the famous fashion designer's attorney, who said his client has been the victim of a "veritable lynching" in the court of public opinion.
The trial could take place between April and June, and Galliano could face up to six months in prison and euro22,500 ($31,000) in fines if convicted, the prosecutors office said in a statement.
Capping a five-day whirlwind of scandal around the designer, the prosecutors said he will face allegations of "public insults based on the origin, religious affiliation, race or ethnicity" against three people.
The news came shortly after the talented 50-year-old designer apologized for his behavior after top-tier house Christian Dior sacked him as creative director over anti-Semitic remarks.
Video of an inebriated Galliano praising Hitler and the subsequent firing of one of the industry's most talented and moneymaking designers have sent shock waves through Paris Fashion Week, which began Tuesday.'

Funeral Protesters
Today's decision by the U.S. Supreme Court to back the right of a small Kansas church to protest outside military funerals is shocking—and not surprising at all.
The shocking part stems from what many Americans no doubt see as the sheer ugliness of the protests of Pastor Fred Phelps and his Westboro Baptist Church. This is a group that has protested homosexuality in American society, particularly in the military, by carrying such signs as "God hates the U.S.A./Thank God for 9/11" and "Thank God for Dead Soldiers."'

Educating China (Videos)
China Pushes English Language (Video and Article)
In the next five years, all state employees younger than 40 will be required to master at least 1,000 English phrases, and all schools will begin teaching English in kindergarten. The government also is funding extensive teacher training programs to find new models for language learning and develop new textbooks.

China vs American spending Video.
I found this kinda of funny and sad at the same time. But overall I think by watching this people can get a general Idea of how sterotypical Americans are being put as when compared to other countries.

John Galliano Fired.
The Dior fall 2011 fashion show is scheduled for March 4, but they'll have to do the presentation without former designer John Galliano.
'Fifty-year-old British designer John Galliano has acted as head designer of Christian Dior since October of 1996, but his reign came to a shocking end today as the result of his reported anti-Semitic behavior. Last week a couple accused the designer of making racist slurs toward them at a Paris café called La Perle. Upon learning of the allegations, Dior immediately suspended Galliano from his post despite the fashion house's upcoming fashion show scheduled for March 4. Yesterday, an incriminating cell phone video was released (though there is some debate over when it was taken) capturing the incident and shows a seemingly drunk designer saying “I love Hitler.” He continues on saying, "People like you would be dead. Your mothers, your forefathers, would all be f------ gassed.”

Other student savings stats from the survey:
- 30% claimed that cost would definitely determine their education plans while 47% said cost could possibly alter their choices.
- 45% have already started saving: 19% have saved over $5,000, 43% have saved $1,000 – $5,000, and 35% have saved less than $1,000.
- 72% responded that they would definitely or possibly prefer money for college over tangible gifts.
